Text Box: Medical College of Ohio – Surgery Clean Room Construction:
Problem: The hospital needs an elevator to service only the ICU.  Construction in a hospital causes dust, debris, and unsanitary contamination preventing medical operations.
Solution: Benchmark utilized its experience in designing and remodeling cleanrooms in microchip manufacturing facilities, to introduce Cleanroom Construction Protocol into the medical facility.
Results: This technology transfer allowed an expansion of the surgical floor to be constructed while surgery was performed only 20 ft away separated only by a soft-wall and air pressure.  Maintaining surgical operations allowed the facility to continue to capture about $500,000 per week in surgical revenue.

Chrysler - New Jeep Assembly Plant Site:
Problem: The Toledo Jeep assembly plant is the oldest automotive assembly plant in the nation and Chrysler wants to replace it with a new plant, but the Toledo economic development groups say “there are no sites large enough for a new assembly plant in Toledo”.
Solution: Benchmark’s Dave Wallace located and designed a site for the new $1.2 billion Chrysler Jeep Assembly Plant with an additional 100 acre supplier park by reclaiming & exchanging natural wetlands, moving a railroad switch yard & rail line for a new access road to Interstate-75, relocating 14 businesses and 120 houses, upgrading the exiting road & transportation system, finishing and capping 2 river polluting landfills.
Results: Chrysler acknowledged the new site saved $400 million in operations cost due to its proximity to their existing plant and kept 5,600 Jeep and 20,000 ancillary jobs in Toledo.
Crown Cork & Seal - Coil Coating Bypass:
Problem: A 36" steel coil coating process line for the manufacture of beverage and soup cans required an improvement project that was scheduled to interrupt production for 8 weeks while the coater and oven operations were installed.
Solution: Benchmark formulated the idea of building a bypass system that would run over the top of the construction area, and allow the line to continue production during the entire coater and oven construction and installation phase.
Results: Eight weeks of production was not lost, allowing the plant to continue to operate and capture about $2 million in revenue.

Lafarge - Modular & Moveable Crusher Structure:
Problem: A limestone quarry operation needed to locate a new rock collection and crushing operation closer to the mining face to save on high costs of haul truck transportation and maximize the margins on their products.
Solution: Benchmark designed the structure in modules, to be fabricated in sections and for quick delivery & installation.  The module design allows the structure to be disassembled and moved within the quarry to different locations.  The 6-week construction schedule was achieved by designing the lower modules and delivering the drawings to the fabricator, so the structure was built from the bottom up, as it was being designed and fabricated.
Results: Construction costs were reduced by 50% and the structure was in operation 3 months ahead of plan allowing a 20% margin increase.
Cablevision - Boston Outside Plant Upgrade:
Problem: The MSO was about to lose rights in a franchise area due to a drop-dead date 3 months away for the franchise agreement's commitment to upgrade.  The project did not have enough design to fulfill their construction obligation to the franchise.  Overbuild of franchise area by another MSO was imminent.
Solution: Benchmark instituted project controls for engineering, coordination, Quality Assurance, and expedited the delivery of design.
Results: The focus was placed on construction and the progress of the upgrade was increased from 3 miles a month to 300 miles a month.  The upgrade was completed before drop-dead date thus retaining the franchise revenue base.  Based on Benchmark's cost verses the revenue base retained, the MSO received about a 300% return on investment within 4 months.
Owens Corning - Headquarters Historical Bridge:
Problem: Owens Corning was building a new world Headquarters in downtown Toledo and Benchmark was designing and managing the site preparation for the City.  The site was located along the Maumee River and the entrance was to utilize an old railroad bridge that was not fit for vehicle traffic and would need replacement.  However, the historical society deemed the bridge as a historically significant and should remain.
Solution: Benchmark decided to remove the historic steel truss bridge structure and replace the bridge deck & supports with a modern DOT bridge.  The historic steel truss would then be cleaned, painted & set on top for the visual and historical effect, yet be a safe modern bridge.
Result: The Historical Groups fully agreed to the revitalization of the bridge and all approvals were given for the bridge as the main entrance to Owens Corning’s new World Headquarters.

AT&T Broadband – Grand Rapids Upgrade:
Problem: The MSO’s contractors were about 95% completed with the 2,000 mile outside plant upgrade, but only 15% of the completed plant was certified as two-way capable.  Construction crews were leaving town and the CATV plant was not generating the digital video and Internet revenue planned from this upgrade.
Solution: Benchmark instituted project controls and a strict Quality Control / Quality Assurance program walking out every node, to identify construction gigs (1,250 gig average/node), instituted a node sweep program to identify bad cable and provided a gig cleanup contractor to repair all the construction gigs and replace bad cable.
Results: Within 6 weeks plant certification increased from 15% to 60%.  After 3 months, over 90% of the plant was certified and the MSO's revenue per subscriber had doubled.
