Problem
Owens Corning was building a new world Headquarters in downtown Toledo and Benchmark was designing and managing the site preparation for the City. The site was located along the Maumee River and the entrance was to utilize an old railroad bridge that was not fit for vehicle traffic and would need replacement. However, the historical society deemed the bridge as a historically significant and should remain.
Solution
Benchmark decided to remove the historic steel truss bridge structure and replace the bridge deck & supports with a modern DOT bridge. The historic steel truss would then be cleaned, painted & set on top for the visual and historical effect, yet be a safe modern bridge.
Result
The Historical Groups fully agreed to the revitalization of the bridge structure and all approvals were given for the new historical bridge as the main entrance to Owens Corning’s new World Headquarters.
